Glacier Paint Out

These are the 11 painting I completed in plein air during the Glacier Paint out which was put on by the Hockaday Museum in Kalispell.  It was such a great event and an experience of a lifetime.  My goal was to push myself in regards to subject matter, size of works and exploration of the park.  I am so happy with how thing turned out and I hope you enjoy the works.  The Lord was with me during this time.

A kayaker set out on Bowman Lake just as some weather began to roll in.  The sheets of rain falling in the distance was the icing on the cake for this moody scene.

Almost to the Top, Oil on Canvas   11"x14"
AVAILABLE
A lone biker approaches the top of Logan Pass and the tunnel ahead on the Going to the Sun Road.  The cloud formations let through some small patches of light which illuminated the road ahead.
After the Hike  14"x11"
AVAILABLE
Bowman Lake sits in a less oft visited corner of Glacier Park.  This ranger station offered a small group of hikers a bit of respite after a long day of hiking.

Afternoon Light: Upper Medicine, Oil on Canvas   15"x30"
AVAILABLE
The shores of Upper Medicine Lake provide a breathtaking vista.  It is often a windy spot which the leaning aspens that occupy its shoreline can attest to.  The afternoon light was something to behold.

Checking In: Glacier Lodge, Oil on Canvas   14"x11"
AVAILABLE
The warm and inviting Glacier Inn was a nice change of pace for me while the outside was a bit hazy.  The eagle sculpture in the center of the lobby leads your eye through to the teepee on the second floor.

Dusk at the Mercantile, Oil on Canvas   8"x10"
SOLD
The hub of the tiny town of Polebridge near the Northeast corner of the Park picked up the late afternoon light nicely..

First Light Pinnacle, Oil on Canvas   8"x10"

I had this spot scoped out before sunrise at about 5AM.  The easel was ready and set up as the sun came over the horizon and lit up the mountain with vivid warm tones.  The standing dead pines in the distance picked up just a hint of light as well.

Glacier glow, Oil on Canvas   16"x20"
AVAILABLE
Just outside St. Marys on Going to the Sun Road, I found this scene.  I love the cast shadow on the snow near the mountain summit and the tiny strand white that makes up the waterfall below.

The Chandeliers at McDonald Lodge, Oil on Canvas   9"x12"

I had my mind made up to do a nocturne during the paintout.  The chandeliers in the McDnald Lodge provided a great focal point as they cas some light on the red tour limos parked outside.

Photographers Haven, Oil on Canvas   11"x14"
AVAILABLE
This pullout at Siyeh Bend on Going to the sun road was a favorite spot for photographer to get a great image of the park.  Rain came down in buckets the moment I was done with this work.

I rose early to get this scene near the Weeping Wall.  The morning light created lovely orange and violet hues int he sky.
