Old Man Winter

Winter in progressing in Montana, and plein air painting is becoming a challenge as cold temperatures cause the paint to gum up on my palette and light snow fall beads up on the canvas.  But I am delighting in these challenges and happy with the spontaneity of the pieces I am creating.

My little creek collected snow on the parts in which it was frozen solid.  The tree limps were weighed down by the fresh snow an created a magical space

After it Fell, Oil on Canvas   8"x10"
AVAILABLE
The afternoon sun shone brightly through a layer of clouds and fog which obscured the pine covered hillside..

Weighed Down, Oil on Canvas   8"x6"
AVAILABLE
As a light snow was falling  the knarled branches of this tree began to give under the weight.  The orange foliage near the crown was also given a light dusting.

This studio piece was based on the 6x8 plein air painting 'Warm Winter Light'.  I wanted to focus more attention on the rich blue cast shadows and the shadows cast by the ripples in the snow.
